I watched my aunt and uncle build a multi-million dollar business in less than a decade when I was a child.

No, it wasn’t a fancy-pants VC-backed start-up. They started in their basement with a desk, a telephone, and a powerful goal.

Even before high school, I saw owning a business gives the power to shape your life. I believe this in my bones even today.

My foundation came from the construction industry.

The day I was handed that piece of parchment saying I had earned a B.A. in Accounting, I felt ready to take on the world. My first venture was as an Accounting Manager for a small family-owned homebuilder.

Going from an orderly classroom to the chaos of building two hundred houses a year was a whole new kind of education. I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

Ultimately my independent nature took over.

I needed to be my own boss. I wanted my hard work to be for my goals – not someone else’s.

I hit the books once again to study for the CPA exam. Shout out to never having to do that again!

I earned my CPA license, and six months later, I bought the firm I worked for (and, later on, a competitor.)

Owning and running a CPA firm has never been dull.

Let’s get real. It’s like riding Space Mountain all day – twists and turns you don’t see coming.

I’ve seen and lived the good, the bad, and the frightening parts of running a business. Best of all, I’ve gained so much wisdom.

We’re taught long hours, and hard work are the secret to success. I won’t sugarcoat it. They’re definitely required.
